Kiwanis Club of Greater Woodbury
The story behind the playground is compelling because the state of NJ has mandated including preschool aged children into the grades offered at local elementary schools. However they have only funded instructional components leaving facilities such as playgrounds unfunded. Although Woodbury schools have playgrounds for ages 5-12 they do not have any age appropriate playgrounds for ages 3-5. Studies have shown that activities of play are very important for even the instructional components of a preschool curriculum. We note also that recess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated academic challenges in the classroom. But equally important is the fact that safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. Recess is a unique form, and a complement to, physical education--not a substitute to it. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees that recess is a critical and necessary component of a child's development. We are proud that this playground has been designed to be an accessible playground and it will be available to the community during non school hours.
