Kiwanis Club of Greater Woodbury

The story behind the playground is compelling because the state of NJ has mandated including preschool aged children into the grades offered at local elementary schools. However they have only funded instructional components leaving facilities such as playgrounds unfunded. Although Woodbury schools have playgrounds for ages 5-12 they do not have any age appropriate playgrounds for ages 3-5. Studies have shown that activities of play are very important for even the instructional components of a preschool curriculum. We note also that recess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated academic challenges in the classroom. But equally important is the fact that safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. Recess is a unique form, and a complement to, physical education--not a substitute to it. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees that recess is a critical and necessary component of a child's development. We are proud that this playground has been designed to be an accessible playground and it will be available to the community during non school hours.

Additional Information

What organizations will support this playground project?: Kiwanis Club of Greater Woodbury, Woodbury NJ Board of Education, West End School PTA, Greater Woodbury Chamber of Commerce
How will you ensure your playground is ready to be installed by Kiwanis One Day 2020?: We have already sown the seeds for support in the Community and the Schools networks. The office of the Superintendent of Schools is on board and has indicated willingness of the school system to help make this happen. The superintendent has already been reaching out to regionally based sports teams that have in the past helped support efforts similar to this. We will be working with a local building contractor to help coordinate the efforts on the day of construction. We have also gotten agreement to reactivate the Key Club at Woodbury HS and plan to involve them in the community build. We have also established a committee within our Kiwanis club of individuals that can help make this project happen and are glad that we have a new relationship with a local newspaper that plans to feature the progress of this project in their local news.
Please feel free to include additional comments about your application.: The community has demonstrated a willingness to support this effort by financial commitments from the PTA at the local school where the playground will be located, The School Board has passed a resolution supporting this project and the local Chamber of Commerce has chosen to include this as one of the charities supported by the Dancing with the Stars charity they established.
